Life is made of unforgettable moments: those instants in which you feel an enormous satisfaction, either because of something that makes you happy or for something that is pleasantly surprising you.
Witnessing the natural spectacle of bioluminescence at the Firefly Sanctuary in Tlaxcala is one of those unforgettable moments in life. An instant that is kept forever in the memory and the heart, because the natural spectacles have a charm that no action made by man can overcome.
Have you ever been inside a Christmas tree? We are guessing not, but this phenomenon we want to talk about will make you feel as if you were inside one. However, it's not a Christmas tree -but a forest in Tlaxcala, and they're not little lights placed by a human -they're fireflies emitting natural light from their body.
The phenomenon at the Firefly Sanctuary in Tlaxcala
Every year, the summer rains prepare the forest of Nanacamilpa in Tlaxcala to become the ideal setting in which millions of fireflies are going to mate to preserve the species.
Maybe you can think that the fireflies travel to this forest to mate, but they actually live here permanently. The summer weather conditions are ideal for them to decide to reproduce and that is when the forest area of Nanacamilpa is filled with lights everywhere.
The female fireflies are the ones that emit that lovely fluorescent greenish-yellowish light, and they do it to attract the males when their eggs are ready to be fertilized. Its light is so irresistible that several males will approach each one of the females, but they only choose one to initiate a delicate aerial dance and mate.
While the fireflies do their thing, the light show leaves everyone who has the fortune to witness it open-mouthed. It is a phenomenon that only occurs in the months of June to August, and just for about an hour each night.
If you are considering seeing this natural spectacle with your own eyes, we congratulate you, because it is totally worth it.
Reasons to book a tour to visit the Firefly Sanctuary
This is a phenomenon that can only be observed at night, in a wooded area and in the rainy season, so being accompanied and guided by professionals is the best option. This way you will avoid getting lost, being late or having your car suffer some damage due to the terrain and puddles that are made by the rain. Also, traveling in a group will help minimize pollution.
In Taste & Travel, we offer the experience "Enchanted Forest" to take you to witness this magnificent spectacle of nature. Of course, Tlaxcala is much more than fireflies: it has an interesting hacienda and pulque tradition, so our experience includes staying in a beautiful colonial hacienda, visiting the Puppet Museum, tasting pulque and other products derived from maguey, and being part of an Otomí-Náhuatl gastronomic workshop.
Enjoy this summer living a unique and very complete experience in Tlaxcala with Taste & Travel.
